Why Disaster Aid
Understanding India's vulnerability and the critical need for comprehensive disaster preparedness and response
India's vulnerability to natural disasters is a critical concern, given its geographical position and susceptibility to a wide range of calamities. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), over 58.6% of the country's landmass is prone to earthquakes, while more than 12% faces the risk of flooding.
Additionally, approximately 5,700 kilometers of the nation's coastline—out of a total of 7,516 kilometers—is exposed to cyclones and tsunamis, and around 68% of its cultivable land is at risk of droughts. These statistics underscore the imperative need for disaster preparedness.
The risks are further exacerbated by demographic shifts, socio-economic disparities, and unplanned urbanization. Development in high-risk zones, environmental degradation, climate change, and the threat of epidemics pose significant challenges to sustainable development, jeopardizing lives, livelihoods, and the nation's resilience.
What We Do
Comprehensive disaster response programs addressing immediate needs and long-term recovery
Immediate Crisis Response
St. George's Academy Society responds promptly to humanitarian crises through its Disaster Response program. From the 2005 Kashmir earthquake to the 2019 Fani cyclone and the 2022 Assam floods, we have consistently acted to address the immediate needs of those affected by disasters.
Essential Services
Our efforts encompass facilitating access to education, healthcare, and livelihood support to ensure that affected individuals are empowered to recover and thrive. We provide comprehensive support systems during the most challenging times.
Long-term Recovery
Taking a long-term, sustainable approach to help communities rebuild, we have been actively involved in crisis management during major calamities including the 2004 Tsunami, Maharashtra floods, Bihar floods, and Uttarakhand floods, working relentlessly to restore hope.
